Divided Souls Entertainment returns to the stage with their latest sound kit entitledCinematic Soul. This time out they enlist their production partner and friend, DJ Pain 1 (Rick Ross, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Gucci Mane, etc.) and his knack for painstakingly creating signature sounds. Together, this triumvirate of talent has produced songs for the like of Public Enemy, Sean Price, Havoc, Nutso, Yo Gotti, Mavis Staples, and more. Their diverse resume enables them to not only sculpt a soundbed for a specific artist but provide the necessary feel a producer is looking for in their next sonic creation.

As with many of the kits constructed by Divided Souls Entertainment, this one offers the ability to create entire songs using all of the elements provided. Propellerhead Reason 9 was announced yesterday. Once again, the Swedish based music software company has failed to meet the mark and expectations of anxious users. Reason’s “New Features” (which have been present in most DAW’s for some time) have been re-packaged and marketed as ‘Groundbreaking’ in the latest YouTube video from Props. It would be pointless to remind the Swedes that their not so distant cousins at Ableton have incorporated most, if not all, of these features over the last few years. Lets not forget the squads over at Apple, Presonus, and various other software devs who have blessed beatmakers and producers with these standard features as well.

Imagine you are an expecting mother who has been pregnant for 7 months. You have been eagerly awaiting a healthy baby boy. You have painted his room, purchased a masculine baby wardrobe, and shared your excitement with every last one of your friends.

Suddenly you go into labor and out pops a pre-mature baby girl from your lady parts. The shock and disappointment are immense! These are the same feelings that most Reason users goes through with every “epic” software update out of Stockholm.

While Propellerhead’s Reason does have some charm and is a fully capable tool for producing music, its upgrade paths over the last few years have been a constant disappointment to the die hard user base. Propellerhead has been as successful as the US Government at taxing their users to death with subpar updates and features that fall short of ‘standard’ to the tune of $129+.

Whats great about the new version of Reason 9? Well… everything which includes:

• Stability/Crash Proof
• Audio to Midi
• Bounce in place (Freeze)
• Visual Themes
• Some new devices

Again, these are only features that a die hard Reason user could get excited about because the rest of the Audio Tech Universe has been toying with them for years. Reason 9 does include some cool new devices which have been dubbed ‘Players’ that make composing and creating from scratch much easier. Infact, so easy that you don’t even have to understand music theory to make something that sounds as good as your favorite (fill in the genre) producer. With the ‘Scales & Chords’, ‘Dual Arpeggio’, and ‘Note Echo’ Players the most standard and creative composing tasks have been streamlined.

It’s hard to get excited about Reason 9 unless you’re already trapped in Propellerhead’s Reason ecosystem. No doubt, Reason users will be excited for this update. However, the rest of the music tech world will keep its eyes focused elsewhere.

Reason 9 is released on June 21 for €405/$449, with upgrades costing €129/$129. Users who bought Reason 8 on or after May 1, 2016 will qualify for a free upgrade.

Analog boom bap is a collection of one shot drum samples and efx created with a dirty and authentic boom bap aesthetic in mind. The samples contained within were created with blends of vinyl samples (including plain ole dirt and static), hand percussion, analog drums and analog efx samples from various analog synths and drum machines.

All 201 samples were processed using variations of customized audio chains that include the finest analog filters (Minimoog Voyager Low Pass Filter), vintage samplers (MPC 60 II), analog mixing consoles and reel to reel tape machines available.

The result is a sample pack full of vinyl & electronic, dirty, saturated ‘synth-bap’ ready drums and efx that bang.

E-mu’s classic sampling drum machine entrenched itself, understandably, at the heart of the 12 Bit Soul movement. So, it’s only right to return to the beginning, the foundation of the inspiration. Divided Souls Entertainment delivers their latest incarnation entitled 12 Bit Soul Vol. 7: The Return of the SP.

As in other volumes, the “1200” has always played a role, helping shape the sounds that people have come to expect from the production company. Divided Souls Entertainment picked some of the hardest kicks and snares from their 12 Bit Soulkits and reprocessed and, in some cases, reconfigured the entire sound to provide their version of a “Best Of” to fans both familiar and unacquainted. Please understand this involves more than simply culling, or more aptly put, pilfering elements from their library, adjusting the pitch to simply give sounds a grainy texture. Every sound was meticulously routed through the Mackie 1604, initially processed in the MPC 2000XL, sampled using the SP1200, and finally delivered to ProTools via a Digi002 preamp. For this round they diligently sought to bring a no frills kit for those producers and composers looking to incorporate an analog vibe in a digital era. As a bonus, they added 20 new drum rolls in an effort to supply a little flair for your drum programming as well.

Like so many producers before them, Divided Souls Productions was reared on the SP1200, understanding its importance as unveiled by the painstaking effort to bring analog feel to your sonic creations with this release.

Professional Sound Designer and Musician Erik Jackson is back with another must have original sample & drum library that is a MUST have for your production arsenal.

Welcome back to Midnight Melodies

Erik revisited the Wurlitzer used in Midnight Melodies Vol. 1, he love the sound of this so much he decided he had to record some more! This time Erik played chords and melodies at the same time. These were played at 90 BPM and drenched with the lonely tones of the Wurlitzer.

He played a series of 7^th and 11^th chords in A minor – C minor – E minor, for layering and also painstakingly layered the Wurlitzer with a Roland SH 101 to create some very lush Pads.

Erik used the Minimoog Voyager to create a variety of synth and bass one shots.

For drums he created one shots by layering tones with the Elektron Analog Rytm 8. These drums pack a punch!

Each of the samples were created and divided into 3 chordal categories. A minor – C minor – E minor. These are emotional sounding keys and work well to express emotion.

“Theory tips”

A minor = C Major

C minor = Eb Maj

E minor = G Maj

In music, relative keys are the major and minor scales that have the same key signature. A pair of major and minor scales sharing the same key signature are said to be in a relative relationship.

Everything was recorded through Neve Pre amps and processed through EMI Vintage Plate Reverb and mixed on the SSL AWS 900, then recorded to a Studar tape machine for saturation.

The sounds are not cut as perfect loops; I left the tails on, for chopping them into new samples. They can be looped at 90 bpm.

Load the proper sounds in your sampler and begin creating. This is a very creative pack, made for very creative individuals.

The demo was recorded in real-time, going back and fourth between my two MPCs . No extra sounds were added.
