BOOM CRATES brings two worlds together: the dusty, sample-based production of Cookin Soul and the live drumming of Tamuz. One side digs through records; the other plays the pocket. Together they built a boom bap and lo-fi drum kit straight from the source.

Cookin Soul has spent over two decades shaping his sound on the SP-1200, MPC 3000 and SP-404, producing for Freddie Gibbs, Larry June, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Nipsey Hussle and Conway The Machine. Tamuz is one of the most respected drummers in the modern beat scene, known for deep-pocket grooves and soulful live performances that have landed in records by J. Cole, The Alchemist, Wiz Khalifa and Chance the Rapper.

The result is 414 hard-hitting drum breaks, dusty one-shots, chops, stabs and raw musical loops made for boom bap, lo-fi and sample-based hip hop. Inside you’ll find live breaks, crunchy kicks, snappy snares, percussion, bass notes, Rhodes chords, horn stabs, wah guitars, vocal phrases, textures and gritty FX, all ready to chop, flip and resample.

Every sound was run through vintage hardware: the E-MU SP-1200, MPC 3000 and Roland SP-404, plus a 1970s Pioneer reel-to-reel, cassette tape and vintage mics. The musical elements were played on a 1970s Fender Rhodes Mark I, Wurlitzer 206, ’70s Fender P-Bass and a 1960s Greco electric guitar, giving you the warmth, punch and character of classic 90s hip hop.

Beat Butcha crafted this kit using an all analog line up including: Sh-1000, Prophet 600, Prophet 5, Model D, Voyager, Jupiter-6, Vox Baroque through various tape echos, hardware spring verb & the Eventide H3000. There were no presets used in the creation of these samples — the FX were created live and refined to taste by tweaking the parameters on the synths while altering delay speeds, echo volume & the intensity of the feedback.
